both the pain and joy of tending to elderly loved ones

By vickadee on October 20, 2016

“Matters of the Heart” is a lovely cross between a deeply personal caregiving journey and a practical idea handbook. Susan’s is the authentic voice of experience, both the pain and joy of tending to elderly loved ones. As a caregiver myself, I especially related to her wisdom on the value of keeping a sense of humor, practicing enormous amounts of patience and actively working to avoid isolation. This is an entertaining and heartfelt read, one that will definitely impact your own journey.

This is such a great book and so timely for me

By Lisa Fenner on October 9, 2016

This is such a great book and so timely for me! Great, practical advice, mixed with humor and understanding words written by one who has obviously "been there, done that" in a sometimes imperfect way, with imperfect parents. I highly recommend it!

A Practical and Personal Treasure for Caregivers

By Natalie B on September 26, 2016

There are a lot of books out there that talk about the practical, informative side of care-giving. There are also a lot of books out there that tell the story of care-giving from a narrative side. Matters of the Heart does both! It is a precious book that interweaves the stories and real life experiences of a daughter care-giving for both of her parents while imparting to the reader valuable information on how to care-give. It is a very open, honest, and vulnerable look at the process of care-giving told by someone who wants others to not feel alone...to learn from her experience...and to know how to survive that experience and not lose themselves in the process, being all the better for it. You will laugh and cry, take notes and gain wisdom from the author in this easy to read book. There are questions for further though and exploration as well as other helpful resources and books to guide you along the way. In an age where so many adults will find themselves care-giving for a parent or relative, this book is a treasure.

I was very excited to find a book like this that dealt with matters that I have had

By Karen E. de Graaf on September 27, 2016

I was very excited to find a book like this that dealt with matters that I have had to deal with in the last 10 years. Care giving seems to be something we all are aware of and many of us have had to handle. However, in the midst of it, one can really feel alone and as if no one else out there has been down this road. As I read this book, I was struck how many of the feelings Susan talks about were exactly what I had been feeling. Along with that, she gives many practical ideas and solutions to situations that will arise when taking care of a loved one. She also expresses so well those things that you may not have thought about that you will most likely tackle in the future.
It is easy to read, full of good stories and examples of life situations.
I highly recommend it for those facing or are in the middle of caring for someone. I will be purchasing more than one of these books to pass along to my friends that I know will benefit from reading it.

Very Useful and Honest Resource for Those Caring for Aging Loved Ones

By Peggy Papert, LCSWon November 23, 2016

Susan's heartfelt book offers a terrific, realistic description of what caregiving can be like. Though it is specific to Susan's journey with her three loved ones, it is extremely relatable to most of our caregiving experiences. As a social worker helping families and their loved ones through their aging needs, I plan on sharing with my clients and friends alike. Well done Susan!!!
